Lead (plumbum) is one of the heavy metals and is extremely toxic to humans. On the one hand, acute poisoning threatens with a higher intake amount, on the other hand, lead accumulates in the human body even with low intake amounts and can lead to chronic poisoning. In addition to more unspecific symptoms such as fatigue and headache, serious damage to the nervous system and blood formation are possible consequences. If lead poisoning is suspected, medical help should be sought immediately and the source of the contamination identified as soon as possible in order to avoid further poisoning. An increased cancer risk is also being discussed for lead and various lead compounds, although the scientific assessment has not yet been completed. (fp)
