Spermidine in cheese improves heart health
If you like to eat cheese, there is good news for you: certain types of cheese (e.g. blue cheese) can help increase life expectancy. Researchers have now found that spermidine, which is contained in cheese, improves heart health and can therefore lead to a longer life.

During a study, the scientists from the Medical University of Graz discovered that spermidine contained in cheese can contribute to a longer life. The doctors published the results of their study in the journal "Nature".

Cheese is good for the heart, but it also contains a lot of fat
Does cheese consumption really increase human life expectancy? At first it sounds as if we should eat lots of cheese. Experimental animals live longer through cheese consumption

High levels of spermidine in the diet lead to reduced blood pressure
Spermidine was first discovered in semen samples, hence its related name. But spermidine is also found in soybeans, chicken liver, peas, corn, and mussels. Not only in mice, but also in humans, a high level of spermidine in the diet is associated with reduced blood pressure and less incidence of heart diseases, the scientists say.

Further research in the field is needed
Our results indicate a new and easily implementable strategy for protection against cardiovascular diseases, the authors of the study write. However, larger studies are needed before any clear conclusions can be drawn, the experts add.

Especially people with weight problems should not overdo cheese consumption
Cheese can undoubtedly be consumed as part of a balanced diet, but - as is generally the case in the diet - this food should only be consumed in moderation. Cheese contains calcium, zinc and other important nutrients, but cheese is also high in fat and high in calories, experts say. A normal recommended serving is 30 grams of cheese
